Comrad Medical Systems is a proud supporter of the NZ ShadowTech initiative. ShadowTech provides girls in years 9 -11 with an opportunity to experience what working in the tech sector is like, encouraging them onto education pathways that lead into technology sector roles.

“Shadowtech started 6 years ago with 42 girls from South Auckland. In the last three years we have taken this initiative nationally, and in 2018 we had 650 girls, over 100 companies and over 300 mentors in the annual ShadowTech event. Around 80% of students said they would be interested or really interested in pursuing a career in tech after attending ShadowTech.”

Edwina Mistry, ShadowTech Lead

For the event this year Comrad hosted a workshop with three year-11 school students from Villa Maria College at Comrad’s office in Christchurch. During the workshop, the students interacted with Comrad team members across the business who talked to them about what their role involved, providing them with broader insights into how the technology sector operates.

“The objective of our participation in ShadowTech is to encourage more women into considering a career in IT. Our team really enjoyed the opportunity to show these enthusiastic secondary school girls how we use agile development to deliver our software products. We have a duty to remove the pretence that surrounds much of what we do and help the young generation understand the wide range of career opportunities available to them in the IT sector.”

About ShadowTech

ShadowTech is an annual echnology career experience day for girls in years 9-11, who meet in their regional centres to hear from local tech leaders and are then hosted by women working in the technology sector to experience ‘a day in the life’ of a tech sector career.

The initiative is supported by NZTech’s community TechWomen, which engages women working in technology to share their experiences, inspiring the next generation of girls to consider studying IT. What sets ShadowTech apart from other youth development programmes is the wide range of roles and industries that are showcased; breaking down preconceived ideas about tech sector careers.
